Jalo Porkkala studied photography at Lahti Institute of Industrial Arts from 1975 to 1979, and in separate photographic conservation, fine print, and documentary courses from 1983 to 1987. Relating to his studies he has made trips to several European countries and North America. He currently lives and works in Pori, Finland.

Since 1970’s Jalo has worked on numerous photographic projects, including photo-journalism, museum and theatre photography, and freelance work. In his guiding and teaching work Jalo Porkkala has been planning and conducting museum photography workshops at the Pori International Photosymposium in 1979 - 1986. He has been teacher of photography at Pori Open College, from 1986 to 1991, and teacher of photography and digital image processing at Pori Art School, from 2001 to 2004. From 1990 to 2015 he has also worked as a full time teacher of analog and digital photography at Satakunta University of Applied Sciences / Fine Art Kankaanpää, Finland.

As a museum photographer Jalo became interested in historical and alternative photographic processes, which he is currently also exploring and teaching. He has been granted several awards in Finland for artistic work, from 1979 to 2015. He has exhibited his work in numerous solo and group exhibitions since 1979.


“I honour the specific essence of photography - its sharpness, fine and smooth tone range, the close relation to reality. The sense of mood and its interpretation are important, a photograph as a mere technical reproduction is dead to me.

To me a photograph is a strange, surreal depiction of the familiar environment, and I want to keep it that way by using special processes that support the content and atmosphere. Why would I photograph the obvious that everyone can see without my images?”
